God’s Promise Realized through Faith

Sermon Text:
Illustration: Many of you might know that I am into fitness, but that was not always the case, especially when I was a kid. I was the slightly chubby Asian kid in a sea of white, wearing large coke-bottle glasses and horribly coordinated. I was ALWAYS the last kid to be chosen for any teams during Physical Education class. I was ALWAYS the first kid to be out for tag or dodgeball. Well, one of the first. And so I believed that I was always incapable of doing any sports or physical activity. But then I remember in fifth grade when one of my PE teachers encouraged me to earn the National Physical Fitness Award patch. This was a test that consisted of a flexed-arm hang, V-sit, sit-ups, and a mile-run. I never even thought I could achieve that award, but my PE teacher thought differently. He wanted me to try. And I tried - I did all I could to do my best. Because my teacher believed in me. Because my teacher called my name and told me that I could do it. And I believed my teacher. By the end of the year, when it was time to take the test, sure, I passed it, but the achievement was founded on the fact that my teacher called me up and told me to go for it. That’s where it started, and that journey took me through the process of going from flab to fit. And even though it took me a few more years before I was into fitness on my own will power, it was that first moment of talking with my PE teacher that brought me to a place where I felt seen - because he believed in me, and I, in turn, believed him.
Christ: In today’s passages, I see something similar in how our Savior, our King, Jesus demonstrates His love and grace. Consider Matthew, the tax collector. For us today, we assume that taxes are a way of life, but during Jesus’ time in Judea, tax collection was considered a symbol of Roman oppression. And for Matthew, a Jew, to be collecting taxes for the Romans was seen as a betrayal of his people. So he wasn’t exactly anybody’s friend. And yet, Jesus calls Matthew. He just walks up to the tax booth and tells Matthew, “Follow me.” And Matthew just walks out and goes with Jesus. What would have made Matthew, a tax collector who was likely making some money in the process, leave and follow Jesus? Because Jesus called his name.
Good News: In a world where we are expected to be enough, to prove ourselves worthy, to achieve, Christ our King grants us grace, mercy, and a calling to be His own. We are enough because Christ says we are enough. We don’t have to prove ourselves worthy, for Christ is worthy. We don’t have to achieve on our own, for Christ calls us to be His own, to be His people, His children.
Transition: But calling in and of itself doesn’t complete the connection. It is faith that reciprocates the call that the Lord gives to us.
Faith: When we look at our passages, we see faith as a key part of what we read. What is faith? So many people believe that it is blindly accepting that something is true. Faith must be something that you have never seen before, but you just have to accept it. Yet that is not how faith really works. For faith to be real, the One you place your trust in must also be real. Not only that, the One in whom you are placing your trust must be trustworthy, someone who is going to deliver on what you believe will be delivered. So it’s not a one-way street. Faith is the belief that the One you believe will do what He promised will actually and fully deliver what was promised.
Testimony: Now faith is an interesting thing. I remember when I felt called to come to Japan more than 12 years ago, and I did not know what the Lord had in store for me. Maybe many of you felt the same - not knowing exactly what was in store for you, especially if Japan is not your native country. And I would have never imagined that in these years, I would be serving in a congregation like West Tokyo Union Church, developing the friendships that I had at work and elsewhere, and having a wonderful wife and two precious daughters. But most importantly, I would not have imagined the spiritual journey, both lows and highs, that the Lord has been taking me on all these years. Yet through those difficult times, faith has been something that has driven me through - because I know the One who is keeping my faith together.
Passages: Faith is truly a powerful thing. Take for example from our passage the woman who had been suffering with hemorrhages for twelve years. She spent all of her money to try treating her condition, but nothing was working. She, however, believed that Jesus could heal her, and after she touches His cloak, He turns and tells her that she is healed - because of her faith. We also read about Jairus and his dying daughter. Jairus, a synagogue leader, comes to Jesus, who is already on the outs with the religious leaders of that time. And he has faith that Jesus will make his daughter well. And Christ does. Jesus brings this young girl back to life - validating and affirming the faith that Jairus had about who Jesus was.
Romans: When we look at the book of Romans, we see this concept of faith clearly explained. Take Abraham, a man whom God called to journey into the wilderness away from his family and all that he had known. And yet, it wasn’t what Abraham did but what Abraham believed that was credited to him as righteousness. Now Abraham did journey, and he did go to the places where the Lord directed him to go, but that only happened because Abraham had faith, that he believed the God who called him was the God who was going to deliver what He promised. Abraham was an old man. A lot older than how old I am now. And his wife Sarah was barren and couldn’t have children. And yet, when God said that he would be the father of many nations, Abraham believed, hoping against hope, fully convinced of what God promised.
Calling: For us to have faith, God has to call us first. God has to be the One who comes and touches our hearts, bringing us to Him. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, and even before we knew we needed God, God already reached out to us and called us by name. It is because of that that we are now able to have faith. Because God has already done His work of salvation, and all we are to do is to believe. Christ is our Savior, full of love, grace, and mercy. He calls, and He sees. He welcomes, and He encourages.
Impact: What does this mean for us? This means that since God has called us, granted us grace and mercy, and granted us the faith to believe, we are now agents of His mercy to a broken world. We are to be the hands and feet of the King who wants to bring the incredible message of salvation and love to a world that needs to hear it. And this is being accomplished through the Church.
WTUC: Over the past 60 years, God has used West Tokyo Union Church to bless the community of believers and the neighbors who are surrounding us. When Tokyo Union Church started this church plant, it was to serve a community that was shifting westward as schools like ASIJ also moved in this direction. And during the past six decades, the Lord has used to bless this community. We had the privilege over the past few weeks to hear from those who had been a part of our community, sisters and brothers who were impacted by how this family loved each other. But it was because of the call to move westward and to faithfully continue as a congregation that has led us to where we are today. Even in the middle of the pandemic that shut down the gathering of this body, WTUC stayed faithful because we believed in the God who called us to be in this community. Now we may not be as numerous as we once were, and we may not be as young as we once were, but what we do know is that God has called us to serve this part of Tokyo and this part of the world. And the calling that God has placed on us has not changed: to shine the light of Christ to West Tokyo so that all who may hear may come to know the saving grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Response: As we come close to the end of celebrating our 60th anniversary, we are in a period of reflection of how the Lord may be calling us to continue serving in our community in this upcoming year. We are discerning how we are to continue moving forward as a church as we see changes happening - including some right here on this campus. As you noticed, part of this campus is undergoing renovation, and part of this campus may no longer be here in the near future. So we are seeing things happening right before us. Where is the Lord calling us to serve right now? That is what we are trying to figure out. And we are asking you to be a part of that journey. Where do you see the Lord calling and leading us here at WTUC? How can we better serve each other and love our neighbors better? I hope that you will participate in this important dialogue as we prepare for the future. I ask that you will most importantly pray for our congregation. Pray that the Lord will show us how we are to serve this community as the church and to give us wisdom to know how to move forward amidst all of the changes happening around us.
Application: As we come to a conclusion on our message today, I want you to reflect on your faith. In Whom do you have faith? What does it mean to be called as a child of God? What is the Lord entrusting you to do today in order to walk in faith and to proclaim that faith to others around you? For the people that we read about in today’s passage, they trusted and believed in all that God said and promised that He will do. Even if it was hard to imagine how it would take place. If that is the case for them, this same faith also applies to us today. God is faithful, and God will stay true even when we run into times of uncertainty and doubt.
Conclusion: Just like Matthew stood up and followed Jesus, just like Abraham believed in God even when it was seemingly impossible, just like the woman who was bleeding for twelve years, just like Jairus, who wanted his daughter to be healed, we too are called to have faith in the God who sealed the deal with the death and resurrection of our King Jesus Christ. May we strengthen our faith in God, trusting that He will continue to guide us each and every day so that we may answer His call to be His disciples and to love those around us as the Church. Amen.
