Sermon Text:
Illustration: I want us to start off thinking about our stage in life. Our perception of our world grows and changes as we age. I can tell this by looking at my two daughters. Our younger daughter Mikayla is not worried about anything. She cries when she’s surprised. She gets upset when she’s hungry (hangry). She’s carefree and adventurous when she finds something new, like trying to climb the ladder on her sister’s new bed. She’s happy when she’s outside running and playing. Cana is a little older, and so she’s scared of things that are in her imagination. She’s learning to make friends and cares about what her parents think about her. She’s starting to operate on observation and emotions. And yet, even at her age, time isn’t a clear concept for her. She still thinks she has all the time in the world. (Having to tell her to clean up her toys takes an eternity sometimes.) What about when we’re past the toddler stage? When we are in grade school, we’re focused on “what we’re going to be when we grow up”. When we’re in adulthood, we’re focused on what jobs we will have so that we can have food and have fun. When we’re in retirement, we’re focused on giving to the next generation - but also with an understanding that things don’t last forever. Once we get to a certain point in our lives, so much of what we think about deals with securing our safety and our lives with a path toward the end of life.
Reality: The reality is that so many of us live to die. We live with a perspective that death is inevitable, and therefore, our decisions and mindset tends to focus on those various chapters in life that help us to “get the most out of the time that we’re in” because we won’t have this life forever. There is a sting when we talk about death, a fear of what happens after this life.
Good News: Our celebration of Easter Sunday today is Good News for us. Every year around this time of year, we have this celebration, but we actually celebrate what happened on Easter Sunday every Sunday - because Jesus Christ rose from the dead, not as a zombie or as some conspiracy theory that was made up by Jesus’ friends. Because Jesus rose from the dead, our lives are transformed forever, giving us an eternal perspective that leads us to live in freedom, love, and peace.
Proof: I mention the zombie or conspiracy theory because it’s not a joke - some people actually suggest these as ideas not because they believe it but because they don’t. When people die, they stay dead. They don’t come back from the dead. And yet, when we read the story of the Resurrection in John, we can believe what is written because we can not only have the testimonies of those who wrote these accounts in the Bible but also how they lived. This includes the martyrdom of the apostles who were once afraid of being associated with Jesus but then saw their risen Lord - and were willing to suffer and die for this truth.
Resurrection Sunday: It was Sunday morning, three days past the Friday when Jesus was crucified on the cross. The apostles who had been with Jesus for three years were nowhere to be found, hiding and afraid. The Jewish religious leaders had made sure their Master was crucified publicly, and they made sure the tomb was sealed - officially by the Roman governor over Judea - so that the apostles would not steal the body and declare Jesus alive. So who do we see coming to the tomb on Sunday morning? Mary Magdalene (and other women from the other accounts of this event) went there to provide more spices for the body that was laid in the tomb. They did not know how they were going to move the stone or get past the guards in order to place the spices on the body. They were operating on the idea that Jesus was dead and gone from them. Because dead people don’t come back from the dead. Until Easter Sunday. When Mary and the others arrived at the tomb, there were no guards. The stone in front of the tomb had been rolled away. There was no body. Mary Magdalene rushed off to tell the apostles, Peter and John, because this wasn’t the way the story should go. They were to put spices on the body and mourn Jesus’ death. Peter and John ran to look, but as Mary reported, Jesus was not there. Then… the two apostles went home. They did but didn’t quite get it. Jesus died. He isn’t supposed to be gone - at least, not like this. Mary Magdalene returned, and she was definitely upset. She thought someone had removed the body. Maybe the gardener. She runs into a man who asks her why she’s crying. Maybe he took the body, and so she asks where the body was taken. Only then did she hear - Mary. That voice. That’s not the gardener. That’s… my Teacher! Jesus! She doesn’t see what she saw before… a tomb that had been raided with the body taken away. No. She sees her King, Jesus, risen and alive. And Jesus tells us not to cling onto Him but to go tell His brothers, His disciples, that He is to return to the Father. He is telling her - life is no longer the same for you.
Impact: Because of Christ’s resurrection, this means that we are no longer bound to the restrictions of our fallen world. We have an eternal perspective, as Paul tells us in Colossians, to set our sights on things above. Some people think that once we believe in Jesus as our Savior, it’s done. We got our ticket to heaven - no longer worried about going to hell, and that’s all that matters, but that’s NOT all that matters. Yes, we are assured of our salvation, purchased by Jesus’ death, but we are also granted new life, life that begins on this earth and will last through all eternity in the presence of our Creator.
Returning Home: Many of us are expatriates, which means we have moved away from our homes in other countries. Some of us may be from Japan but are not living in our childhood homes. So there were times, for many of us, that going home meant something special. It meant good things. (I say this knowing that not all of us had the most peaceful homes, and so this is not true for everyone, but if you did not feel the desire to go home, think of a place where you did find comfort.) For me, I remember as a university student that going home meant I could just take a break from my studies, not worrying about my responsibilities and obligations, and just be a son to my parents and a sibling to my younger brother. I could just relax and be at peace. For us living on this earth, those who have been saved through what Jesus did on the cross and rose again, we are given the opportunity to live a full life, one that is not focused on our path to death but freedom to live in a way that shows our lives do not end. Christ has broken our old pattern of living in order to die at the end. Hell has no victory. Death has no sting. The struggles and the boredom and the anxieties of this life will continue in the next chapter.
Life Eternal: Because once our chapter of lives on this earth ends, all of the brokenness and painful nature of this life also ends. All things will be new, and we will be home. Really home. This earth is just a transit point, and so we look forward to our eternal home, living life with love and peace, for it is Christ who has loved us through His sacrifice and has given us peace with God in His resurrection.
Application: So what does this mean for us? The Good News is happening now, and yet, it’s not fully done yet. We have an amazing opportunity to live a full, resurrected life. Because we have been given this new perspective, our decisions to care for others and to love our neighbors comes with the freedom that no longer binds us to the timeline of living on this earth. We are free to seek the welfare of the city, to make the love of Christ the love we give to one another and to others. We don’t operate with the view that our lives have a time limit. We work and live with an eternal perspective. It doesn’t ignore the realities of our broken world. We don’t live in a spiritual utopia where we are free from the wars and suffering that seem to become louder with each news report. We don’t forget that someday, our chapter and time on this earth will conclude. And yet, we don’t have to live in fear. We live as people who know that because of Jesus, we can face tomorrow with hope. When our perception of our lifespan moves from a finite one to an eternal one, it permeates or flows into our actions and life choices.
Testimony: Back when I was growing up, I wanted to be a meteorologist - since nine years old. I wanted to be the guy on television warning people about dangerous weather because I was inspired to do so by another meteorologist on TV. And for many years, even though I considered all sorts of career ideas through grade school and into university, I wanted to still be a meteorologist. Once I became a meteorologist, I found myself not sure what to do. I was doing work in my hometown in South Carolina, but what was next? Was it time for me to move to a bigger city and work for a bigger TV station? Or was I going to someday work for a big network? I found myself constantly running the rat race of trying to move up the ladder. Step by step. Little by little. Until one day, the Lord called me into pastoral ministry - and then a call to Japan. The Lord was taking me on a journey that would push me out of what I had known, what I had planned, what I had expected. Instead, the Lord was calling me to understand that He was on a totally different timeline. My home? Was not of this world. My identity? Was not in what I did. My future? Was not up to me. Little did I know that the journey the Lord was calling me to walk was on a perspective that was set into eternity. My wife and I both have experienced this through our calls to Japan, and we are happy to discuss more about it. What I have learned is that when it’s up to us, we are going to reach for the option that seems to be the “right answer” in that moment but God calls to see that it’s greater than just what we can see now. Are you living your life with an eternal perspective? What does it mean for you to live your life freely in Christ?
