Sermon Text:
We’re back! I hope that you were able to enjoy some time during the summer to visit other churches and connect with God in different ways over the past couple of months. It’s good to see you again, and I’m grateful to be able to continue serving as your pastor for this upcoming year.
Celebration: As we begin this year, we are going to be embarking on a celebration of God’s faithfulness to West Tokyo Union Church for 60 years. 60 years is quite a long time, and it’ s exciting to be a part of the story God is writing in this part of Tokyo. If you would like to be involved in planning or volunteering for upcoming events in the life of our church, please let us know!
Illustration: I’m going to start us off with a mental picture of one of my favorite places here in Japan. Just close your eyes and let me describe this place to you. It’s summer. It’s warm under the sun with a nice gentle sea breeze that flows over you as you walk along the shoreline, with the white sand surrounding your toes. You hear the gentle swishing of the waves as the green-blue waters move to and from the beach. You can see the white puffy clouds rolling by under the shining sun. This is considered one of my happiest places to go to. And no… I haven’t yet been able to go off on a vacation this summer. However, I wanted to share this with you because every time I do get to go to Miyakojima in Okinawa Prefecture, I am always taken aback at how beautifully God created this part of the world. Maybe you have places that you absolutely love and are taken aback by how God created it - whether it is in the mountains, at a cabin at the lake, or watching animals at a wildlife sanctuary, the aquarium, or even the zoo. God is indeed the Master Artist, the Creator of a universe that just blows our mind in the beauty and design of it all. (You can open your eyes now.)
Humans: And yet, I would venture to say that despite all of the amazing things we observe in this world - and even beyond… the stars, planets, and the vast galaxies that we can’t even see beyond the naked eye - there is nothing quite as incredible as God’s creation of creatures in His own image: humans.
Facts: There are times we are amazed by what certain people can do. Usain Bolt who ran record-breaking 44.72 kilometers per hour, a Croatian freediver who held his breath underwater for a little over 29 minutes, or ultramarathon swimmer Sarah Thomas who swam nonstop for 168.3 kilometers! But also think about this. 100 years ago, the modern computer did not exist. 50 years ago, the Internet as we know it did not exist. 25 years ago, YouTube did not exist. 10 years ago, Google Translate was a struggle as I was trying to navigate the streets of Tokyo with my limited knowledge of Japanese. 5 years ago, ChatGPT did not exist. All of this development, all of these achievements… were by people.
Reality Check: But let’s be honest. As much as people have accomplished things, I wonder how many of you might have gone… “Nothing is quite as incredible as God’s creation of creatures in His own image: humans?! Have you seen what people have done in our world?” And yes, it’s so true. We have people fighting, wars igniting, tensions flaring - and life can be challenging with struggles of health, finances, and other difficult circumstances. We know that we don’t always live lives that pursue God and that seek to love our neighbors. “Sure, people are cool… sometimes. But they can be a real pain too.”
God’s frustration: And you know what? God has shown that He can be frustrated with people too. In our first Scripture reading, we read from the book of Jeremiah, a prophet sent to the kingdom of Judah during a period of great spiritual darkness among the nation. God spoke many times about the stubborn and even wicked nature of the people. In chapter 18, God sends Jeremiah to a potter’s house, and the Lord speaks to the prophet there. As the potter is trying to shape the clay, something didn’t go right, and so the potter was reshaping the clay to make it right. (Have you ever tried working with clay? Or Play-doh? It can be a challenge sometimes, but ultimately, you have the ability to shape and rework how you see fit.) Then God asks the question - can I not do the same thing with you, O people of Israel, like this potter is doing? Can I not reshape you and rework you the way this potter is changing the clay? God wanted to be able to shape, guide, and love His people, but they were not responding in repentance and turning from evil. God really was calling for their turn of their hearts, but they would not listen, and ultimately, the nation of Judah would be plucked from their homeland and exiled for 70 years.
Good News: But we can’t lose sight of the fact that God does not leave us in our broken state. God chooses not to leave us in a place where there is no healing, no redemption, no restoration. Why is that? It is because God made us and loves us, and today’s second Scripture reading paints an incredible picture of how God formed us into the people who we are.
God knows everything about us, flaws and all. And He knows that we are creatures that do not pursue Him fully. “O Lord, you have searched me and known me.” There is no way God could not see the flaws that we have, and yet, with incredible love, grace, and care, the Lord guides us. It shatters the psalmist’s mind… writing “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.” It does not make sense for us to have the God of the universe care for tiny little us. I mean, even now, we live in a world of 7 billion people, and that’s just the current global population. Add that to the billions of people who have lived on this earth throughout history, and it makes you feel even smaller than an ant. And yet, God knows each and every one of us, intimately, deeply, and thoroughly.
In fact, God not only knows us - God created us. He knows our past, our present, and our future. Even before we had eyes, ears, and a mouth, even before our little tiny fingers had formed, God was the One creating us, knowing all that will be. Have you seen a picture of what a two-month old baby looks like in the womb? They look like little shrimps - not exactly the cute, cuddly image of babies after they are born. And yet, we are precious to God even then.
The psalmist responds in an incredible way - “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Fearfully and wonderfully made. What does that mean? When you dig into the Hebrew language, the word for “fearful” here mixes meanings of awe, being afraid, and even worthy of being praised. The fact that the God of the universe made us humans should put within us awe, even a sense of fear of the incredible God that is beyond our understanding, which then ultimately turns us to praise of our Lord. That’s the incredible way that God has created us. How about the word “wonderful”? In some respects, this word comes naturally to us - that something is wonderful, that it is something excellent and astonishing, and yes, that is something that we see here. But there’s another aspect to this term - wonderful meaning beyond ordinary understanding, that it is something quite complex. And think about this - we humans are not modular beings. We can’t easily just remove something and then replace it with something else like computer parts. The various organs, while having their particular functions, require a vast complex connection of blood vessels, nerves, bones, and muscles for things to operate and remain in place. And think about the brain itself. A bunch of synapses firing electrical signals left and right, commanding our hands, feet, but also driving our desires, actions, and thoughts. Thoughts and actions that are levels beyond what any other creature can do on this earth. Yes, indeed, you are wonderfully made - by a loving, gracious, and caring God.
God: It is all because of God that we can see the amazing, wonderful world that exists. It’s beyond our comprehension, as we see in verses 17 and 18. “17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with you.” We are found that in the end, God is all Who truly matters.
Wonderfully Made: When God creates, and when God redeems, we can see all who God is. When the world fell into disarray, God redeemed it Himself through the work of Jesus Christ, the Son. When the world became a place of pride, sin, and pain, Christ came in humility, to wipe away and forgive sin, and to heal the divisions and hurts that exist. That is why we can be called sisters and brothers in Christ, children of God because of our Savior. And that is how for sixty years, West Tokyo Union Church has been able to continue as a community. No matter what stage in life, no matter where we are from, no matter our faith tradition, we love each other in Christ. We pray for each other in Christ. We weep for each other in Christ. We rejoice with each other in Christ. Made of people wonderfully made, this community is also wonderfully made because of Christ.
Gospel: And this is the Gospel that we declare to those here in West Tokyo and to those all around us. We declare that we are wonderfully made and are wonderfully saved by God. As we start off this 60th anniversary year at WTUC, may we declare the truth of God’s love and saving grace. May we celebrate and worship the God who has created all things and has made all things new. May we confess our shortcomings, proclaim forgiveness in Christ, and testify to our great God who has wonderfully made us. Amen.
