Sermon Text:
Question: I want us to start off today’s message with a moment of reflection. I want us to think about a time when you were truly thankful. You know… that time of thanks that really came from deep within your heart - maybe it can even be described as joyful. Do you remember why you were thankful? What was the situation that eventually led you to that moment?
Illustration: I think my most recent moment of deep gratitude was when our family went on our vacation to Okinawa at the end of September. I personally have been really busy, dealing with a major company project while also supporting the ministries both here at WTUC and at Tokyo Union Church. I was averaging 4-5 hours of sleep per night, and I was getting physically, emotionally, and spiritually drained. When we boarded the plane to go on our vacation, I didn’t know exactly what to expect being the dad of two really young kids. I hear typically that vacations tend to be more about just getting the kids good experiences rather than everyone getting rest. But as the days went by, I found myself detaching from work, not thinking about what I had to do when I got back to Tokyo and instead really enjoying the time with my family, seeing the beauty of the world that God created, and getting some actual sleep at night. I had this continued sense of real gratitude as I found myself getting the much needed reset that had been missing for a long time. In our busy world, we sometimes run around doing things that we forget that we need times of real rest. In the end, I was not only feeling rested but truly thankful - thankful that I had the opportunity and the flexibility to have some time to recharge when I needed it most.
Point: We talk about how important it is to be thankful - almost to the point where it becomes cliche. Our annual focus on thanksgiving seems like a ritual that needs to be done. And then when we have those big moments happen in our lives where we find a “reason” to be thankful, that’s when many of us tend to give thanks. However, when we look at our Scripture passages this morning, we are given an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be thankful.
Isaiah: In the book of Isaiah, the Lord had sent Isaiah the prophet to the nation of Judah. Instead of living as God’s people, they chose to follow the ways of the world, not honoring God through worship and care for those around them. The Lord speaks to the unfaithfulness of the nation and her people. But in the midst of God’s judgment on His people - and with the nations around them - the Lord speaks through Isaiah and inserts moments of hope. In chapter 11, the one that comes before our passage today, we read about one of the promises of the Messiah - “a branch shall come out of the root of Jesse” - and throughout the chapter, we read about how through this “branch”, the Lord will right the wrongs, bring justice to a world of injustice, and peace across the lands where strife exists. The Lord is to restore all that is broken, and that includes the people of Judah who were exiled for their unfaithfulness. It is through this whole work of restoration that will lead people of all nations to come to the Lord.
Current Context: It’s hard to really imagine how this would look for us in our current situation. We’ve covered this point in multiple sermons by multiple speakers - that our world continues to seem more and more chaotic, that wars continue to rage, and peace seems ever so distant. And yet it was in a circumstance just as chaotic and just as unstable that the Lord spoke this message of salvation to not only the nation of Judah but to the world.
Passage: In our passage from Isaiah today, we read one of thanksgiving. Even though the people received the Lord’s wrath because of their sin and rebellion, it is from this same God that salvation came. It is because of our need for salvation that thanksgiving came - for the Lord through the “Branch” - the promised Messiah - brought that salvation to His people. In response to the people’s deep need for God's love, God gave love. Isaiah 12 says that the people will give thanks even though the Lord had been angry, and instead, He would comfort them. God would be their salvation, strength, and might. And as they give thanks, the people will tell those around them to give thanks to the Lord and proclaim all that He has done - because He has done amazing things. The people are able to give thanks because they know that their inability to fully honor God and their wayward desires are resolved in God. The people declare thanksgiving and proclaim this Good News to the world. This is how we are able to know today what the Lord has done and continues to do.
Big Picture: When we look at the big picture, we find that in our deepest issues and our hardest problems stem from our fallen world and our brokenness. The world that our God created was broken by sin, and we are left with a world that continues to push us into hopelessness and ingratitude. But because of what Christ has done, because of His death and resurrection that removes our sin and shame, the root cause of our broken world is solved, and when we are brought into this saving grace, we have no other way to respond but be wonderfully thankful. Our need for God is the greatest need we will ever have, for we were created to be in relationship with the Lord. We need God, and when we realize all that God has given to us, it will lead us to thanksgiving.
Cyclical Relationship: When we usually talk about giving thanks, we usually start from the situation of need and then talk about how we give thanks for that need being filled. However, when we make it a practice in our lives to be continuously thankful, it can also remind us from where we come from - from our situations of need and darkness, which helps to fuel our thanks and attitude of gratitude. The practice and act of thanksgiving is useful for our need for God and the work God is doing in our lives. When we take moments to reflect on times of thanks, we are able to see more of what God has done for us.
Psalm 98: But our thanksgiving is not just for our own sake. It also is supposed to impact the world as well. Our passage in Psalm 98 shows us what the result is when the people of God rejoice in what the Lord is doing. Because of the salvation that God has accomplished, the people rejoice and give thanks. When the people are giving thanks, others around them hear and see what the Lord is doing. And that becomes something that spreads beyond themselves and into the world. The Good News of what God has done doesn’t stop with just us. When we live as thankful people, when we are thankful for what God has done in saving us, people notice because they too find a desire to hear what this is all about. The Good News isn’t just for us - it is Good News for those all around the world. Here’s an interesting side note - the hymn “Joy to the World” that we typically sing during the Christmas season is based on this psalm, which I think is quite appropriate for us to reflect on as Advent begins in a couple of weeks.
Experiment: My wife and I were talking about today’s sermon as I was preparing to write it, and she mentioned something that I thought was a good example of helping us practice a posture of gratitude. She said this was something that she heard on a Christian radio station back in Minnesota. Many times, we end up waking up in the morning, and a lot of us are pulling up our phones to scroll through things. However, instead, when we wake up, we start our morning with a brief prayer. The prayer is “Lord, open my eyes and help me see you working in my life and in our world today.” We ask each morning for the Lord to open our hearts and see where God is, where we need Him, and how He is working. When we are able to see that, it helps us to find thanksgiving for what the Lord is doing in our world. We are reminded of our salvation and the fact that God is here - still working, still here to surprise us at times when we need it the most.
Conclusion: Our gratitude stems from the fact that Christ has wonderfully saved us. When we are able to see how we were saved from our deepest need - where we absolutely need God - Christ has fulfilled them - all of them. When we are forgiven, when we are given incredible freedom, then we can live each day wonderfully thankful. Let us celebrate what the Lord has done in our lives today and every day. Amen.
