Passages:

2 Chronicles 7:12-22 (NRSVue)

12 Then the Lord appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him, “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice. 13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain or command the locust to devour the land or send pestilence among my people, 14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. 16 For now I have chosen and consecrated this house so that my name may be there forever; my eyes and my heart will be there for all time. 17 As for you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my ordinances, 18 then I will establish your royal throne, as I made a covenant with your father David saying, ‘You shall never lack a successor to rule over Israel.’

19 “But if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you and go and serve other gods and worship them, 20 then I will pluck you up from the land that I have given you, and this house, which I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. 21 And regarding this house, now exalted, everyone passing by will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this house?’ 22 Then they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the Lord the God of their ancestors who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they embraced other gods and worshiped them and served them; therefore he has brought all this calamity upon them.’”

1 Kings 11:1-13 (NRSVue)

11 King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, 2 from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the Israelites, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for they will surely incline your heart to follow their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. 3 Among his wives were seven hundred princesses and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned away his heart. 4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. 5 For Solomon followed Astarte the goddess of the Sidonians and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not completely follow the Lord, as his father David had done. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites on the mountain east of Jerusalem. 8 He did the same for all his foreign wives who offered incense and sacrificed to their gods.

9 Then the Lord was angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice 10 and had commanded him concerning this matter, that he should not follow other gods, but he did not observe what the Lord had commanded. 11 Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this has been your mind and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and give it to your servant. 12 Yet for the sake of your father David I will not do it in your lifetime; I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 I will not, however, tear away the entire kingdom; I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

Sermon Text:

  1. Series: Over the past few weeks, we have been going through our series “We Three Kings”. We heard about the people of Israel clamoring for a king, and they got the king they deserved – King Saul. Then God granted grace to the people when He provided King David. God’s grace continued as He built David a house, and King Solomon, David’s son, built the Lord a house – the temple. We saw the flaws of each of our kings and our need to focus on the one King who we really need – Jesus Christ. We are coming to the conclusion of our series today, and we will wrap it up with a second message on King Solomon.

  2. Illustration: I had a conversation with my wife this past week that made me reflect a bit about leaders with great influence. Rachel had been following this one social media influencer on Facebook who was giving “real talk” to guys who were having trouble in their marriages and relationships. I had seen him online a few times too. He was good at dishing out solid advice, trying to get guys to understand more about the woman in their life and the troubles that they faced, primarily due to mistakes and decisions that they were making – some of them were seemingly really obvious ones. He was as strong speaker, but she mentioned the other day that this guy had just filed for divorce – because he had cheated on his wife. He would have chewed out guys asking him for advice about the same exact situation, and yet, it became his own downfall. Rachel and I then talked about how this was not isolated to just one person. Prominent Christian speakers and ministers – people who were powerful speakers and apologists for the faith – found to have done horrible things that spoke volumes against what they were actually saying. They spoke boldly into the culture but then fail miserably, many times falling to the very sin they were criticizing.

  3. Point: However, this is not limited to famous Christian preachers and speakers. We are all foolish kings and queens in our own way. We find ourselves wanting to be our own god, and that really impacts us in our decisions and our actions. None of us are immune to poor decisions and bad judgment. In fact, without us even noticing, we make horrible decisions based on what we like, prefer, or desire. We make ourselves the king or queen of our universe, and that’s where it goes wrong.

  4. Passage: Our first Scripture passage comes right after the dedication of the temple. We talked last week about the incredible celebration that took place and the prayer of King Solomon, asking the Almighty God to dwell among mere mortals within a tiny temple made by human hands. And yet, God answers that prayer, and as we read today’s passage, He points out what is required and what is expected.

    A. God tells Solomon a verse that many of us have heard: “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” One of the greatest promises that God made after the temple was dedicated was that if the people humbly repented of their sins, the Lord will forgive them. What an incredible promise this was – that the Almighty God of Heaven would grant forgiveness. That is grace. That is love.

    B. God also tells Solomon that if he walked before the Lord the way his father David had done faithfully, then the Lord would establish his throne, promising to Solomon as He did to David, his father, “You shall never lack a successor to rule over Israel.” Once again, the promise that the Lord would build David a house will continue as long as Solomon obeyed and followed God.

  5. Contrast: But for some reason, just as we saw with King Saul and King David, we couldn’t have possibly expect King Solomon to get it right. You would think the third time is the charm, but our second Scripture passage tells us that it is certainly not. Our second Scripture passage comes toward the final part of Solomon’s reign. And some of the very things that were helpful to Solomon having a peaceful reign also became his downfall. Unlike David, who expanded the territory of Israel and established the nation as a dominant powerhouse in the region through warfare, Solomon created alliances through marriage while building partnerships in trading and sea navigation. And yet, by marrying so many different women with different religious ideologies, Solomon was trapped because he wanted to keep them happy by allowing them to continue practicing worship of false gods. He even made places of worship for them, and he even followed his wives in worshiping their gods. So the irony is that Solomon sought to make peace with the people around Israel but ended up losing the peace that was real – the one that only God could give. The Lord made it clear that there were consequences. Solomon, who said he needed wisdom to govern the people, felt that he had it all, and that led to his downfall. Now, instead of having an established throne over all of Israel, the kingdom will mostly be ripped and torn away from the line of David – except for one piece because of God’s promise to David. Even then, God still provided both grace and mercy to an undeserving king. I find it quite interesting that even though we knew David failed spectacularly in so many ways, oddly enough, God still said that David followed the Lord wholeheartedly, unlike Solomon. That doesn’t mean that David was perfect – far from it! However, it did mean that even with his significant flaws, God still saw him as a man who truly sought after God’s own heart. Solomon, who started off with much promise, did not finish well in the end.

  6. Consider: So what is the passage trying to tell us here?

  7. Reflection: How many of us have kept the new year’s resolutions that we made at the beginning of this year? Most people barely keep up with it for two weeks, much less ten months. How many of us said that we are going to get better at something, like dealing with relationships or issues that we have had for some time? None of us are able to keep the promises that we make. We are all prone to wander away. Even though we may have been saved and redeemed by Jesus Christ, we are still going to mess it up. Sometimes badly. Sometimes miserably. Because our hearts steer what we do, and our hearts are prone to wander. Our hearts are the king or queen of our lives, and we are foolish ones at that. How can we possibly deal with being a foolish king or queen?

  8. Christ: This is why Jesus had to came. Because we cannot save ourselves. We are no better than the kings that we have studied over the past few weeks. Being in leadership does not make one better. Being in power does not make one better. Being well known does not make one better. The sickness of our hearts means we need a Redeemer, a Healer, a Savior.

  9. God: A few weeks ago, Rev. Dr. Paul Shew preached from Micah 6 in his separate mini-series on Authentic Christian Living for today. What is the key question that appears in the chapter? Micah 6:8 says, “He has told you, O mortal, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?”

  10. Consider: How would this verse help us walk in wisdom – so that we may not be foolish? How does this verse fit into our lives today as believers in Christ?

  11. Application: God is not impressed with all the things that we do. Not because it bores Him but because He makes it very clear what He wants of us. He wants us to do what is just and right. He wants us to be steadfast in our love and kindness – not just people whom we want to love but to all those around us. And in all of this, we are to be humble – not just modest but humble, meaning that we acknowledge that we know so little compared to our great and Almighty God. But even these things are difficult for us to follow, which is why Christ came. Because of Christ, He showed us what it means to do justice and to love doing what is right – and making things right. Because of Christ, He showed us what it means to love steadfastly, to love kindness – because He demonstrated it. He showed us what that ultimately looks like. And even though Christ is the God of the universe, He came and dwelt with us, walking right next to us, humbly born to a virgin in a stable. Christ has already come and showed us what it means to live an abundant life in Him. This is how we are able to walk as His children, not as foolish kings and queens of our own domain.

  12. All Saints Day: Today is November 1, which in the church recognizes as All Saints Day. Depending on which branch of Christ’s church you identify with, this is either a solemn day or a festive day. There is the solemn aspect of those in Christ who have departed from our presence here into the other side of eternity. Yet, it is also a festive day because we recognize that all of us in Christ are saints in the Lord, and as the Church together, we are all going to be in the presence of the Lord, perfected and no longer suffering. Essentially, it is the fulfillment of the hope that we have on this earth. As we conclude this series, we know that we are all foolish kings and queens because we will fail from God’s perfect standard, but someday, we will no longer have to fight against our own broken flesh because in death and in life, we belong to Christ, and we will be fully renewed and restored in Him. All Saints Day helps us to remember this important spiritual bond that we all have as Christians, both those here and those who have gone into the presence of the Lord. Let us recommit ourselves to walking humbly with God, making Him King of our lives and committing ourselves to do justice and to love steadfastly and with kindness, to dedicate ourselves through what Jesus Christ has done for us, holding steadfast in hope in Him. Amen.
