Sermon Text:
Gratitude: Today marks the last Sunday of our WTUC calendar year before we hit summer break over the next couple of months. It feels just like yesterday that I was asked by the Steering Committee to come and serve as pastor of this wonderful congregation, and I could not have imagined where the Lord has led us over the past ten months. I made a remark to a couple of folks during our Celebration Sunday last week that while I may wear many different work hats right now, the opportunity to serve WTUC has topped it all. To be able to walk with you on your faith journey, to wrestle with what it means to be salt and light in West Tokyo in today’s context, and to be able to pray and support you has been truly a joy. And this moment of gratitude didn’t just come up this weekend because we’re closing out this year together. My wife Rachel (and also members of the Steering Committee) have heard from me many times throughout the year that I just love being able to be a part of this family in Christ, and so I first thank God for calling me here, and I thank all of you for the opportunity to serve here. I know that I have many areas where I can continue to grow, and I hope that you will afford me the understanding and patience to keep learning and walking alongside you as we live out our faith in Christ.
Stewardship: Over the past few weeks, we have been diving into the topic of stewardship. We first heard from Ruth Ingulsrud, who has faithfully served in many areas of WTUC during the past few decades but especially in the area of youth and children’s ministry. She shared about her father and how even doing things that seemed to be a challenge for us, he was able to flourish with a smile. Then last week, we heard from Carol Sack, who also has faithfully served here in our community during the past few decades, sharing about how God takes us on a magnificent adventure, beyond what we might have ever imagined in terms of how we might be able to serve. If you missed either of these messages, please stop by our website and check out the Sermons section, where you can hear from these sisters about how the Lord really used them and people in their lives to the glory of God.
Dedication: Today, as we close out the WTUC church year, we are holding Dedication Sunday. Dedication Sunday is a practice observed by churches to help guide its members to consider how to steward and use our personal resources, whether it is financial, time, or skills, to serve God within the church community and the neighbors around the area. There are practical reasons for this. It helps the leaders of the church understand the resources available to the church over the coming year. It also helps to gauge interest in service and outreach. It also helps with planning for worship services and events. So certainly, there are practical ways for this to help the church. However, there is also a deeper reason for this practice. Dedication Sunday is a time of spiritual reminder for us to understand why we are called to serve. It is wonderful that WTUC has always had a heart to serve in the community through its outreach partners. It is wonderful that WTUC has had members who worked hard to produce big events, like our Thanksgiving Potluck, Easter Celebration, and our big Celebration Sunday party last week (thanks, Ann and Betsy!). And we have volunteers who help set up and clean up when we gather on the JLC campus, plus the fellowship hour and the tech work and the liturgists who help to move the service along. But these are just some of the many members of our community who are serving. And in the context of our passages today, we see that service is something all followers of Christ are called to do. Service, while not a “command” per se, is really a core part of who we are to be as Christians.
Romans: In the epistle to the Romans, the Apostle Paul is writing to the church in Rome, and it is considered his biggest theological written work in Scripture. Today, we read a couple of verses in chapter 12. This comes after chapters describing the incredible work of salvation in Jesus Christ, where the Gentiles come to Christ, then prompting Israel with the desire to also come to salvation in Christ. Then we hit chapter 12. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Analysis: There are a few points we can see in this passage.
Living Sacrifice: In the Old Testament, sacrifices were killed. There was always payment of blood and death. Christ, the ultimate sacrifice, gave His life on the cross. So instead of our death, we are given an opportunity to provide ourselves to God in continuous worship, living service to God and to our neighbors in love.
Spiritual Worship: Our primary purpose as a living sacrifice is to give God honor and glory. We are to give of our whole selves to the purpose of pointing to God and what He has done.
Transformation: How is this possible? Through Christ, we have new life. The old is gone, and the new has come. Therefore, we are to have a transformation, a renewal of our minds that no longer follow the patterns of this world in opposition to God but instead, desire to seek and pursue the Lord.
Discernment: This transformation enables us to discern what is God’s will for our lives, reflecting the love of Christ to those all around us.
Response: We see later in the passage how this plays out in our lives. I’m not going to cover all of the verses, but here is a part of the passage starting with verse 13: “13 Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are.”
Analysis: We see the practical implications of what it means to be a living sacrifice in Christ.
Contribution: In honoring God as our spiritual act of worship, we are to not just wish people well but to actually do what we can to support those who are in need. We are to be generous in our time and in what we possess in order to help those who are in need. And I’m thankful to see that our church has done that for so many years, particularly in the area of outreach, including supporting local orphanages and other organizations who help those in extremely difficult situations.
Blessing: Our presence as Christians must be to bless those around us. We have seen abuses of power and horrible things done in the name of Christ. As living sacrifices, we are not to be agents of pain and harm but of grace and mercy.
Rejoicing and Weeping: As living sacrifices, we are to reflect Christ in His heart and His love. When we have people who are rejoicing, we are to rejoice with them. We are to celebrate the good things that have taken place. We had an opportunity to do that last Sunday, and we should continue to do so. At the same time, we as a congregation have also been faithful to support those in our community in prayer. Through our time of Prayers of the People, we have heard requests of those who are suffering, who are going through struggles, who are seeking refuge in difficult times. We weep with those who weep. Our hearts should be one of compassion and empathy, to be the heart, hands, and feet of Christ.
Humility: We are to be living with others in harmony, with humility in order to build each other up. I think West Tokyo Union Church is so unique in this aspect - a church that has such diversity in background and faith, and yet, grounded together in Christ, which allows us to continue in harmony. We are not to be the elites but to be locked together as fellow sisters and brothers in Christ.
Scale: There’s an interesting question that seems to crop up whenever we talk about service and stewardship. “How will my itty bitty little contribution do anything in terms of service? If you’re the pastor or a member of the steering committee, then you make big contributions to the life of the church.” True, we may be in a place of greater responsibility, but it is not a “bigger” contribution as opposed to God using us in certain ways. The question really takes the focal point off of our focus of spiritual worship (God) and ends up placing it on us. However, when we look at our first Scripture reading from John 6, we can see that it really doesn’t matter how “big” or “little” our acts of service may be.
Context: We read about the ever familiar story of Jesus feeding the 5000 men (plus women and children). The Gospel of John is the only one who gives specifics about the source of the five loaves of bread and two fish - a boy. Apparently he packed his lunch while others did not. A single combini bento will not even feed all of us here. And yet, we see how Christ used just these few things to miraculously feed all those who had gathered there. The boy could have just said no - I want my lunch, but the food was blessed, and it fed thousands of people. It’s about what God can do - so that God can use me.
Gospel: We see and hear about the calling to serve in Christ. And we know, including myself, that there are areas where we just don’t seem to hit the mark when it comes to service. But here’s the Good News. Christ is the Fulfillment in our lack. Christ is the Provider in our need. Christ is the Lifegiver that gives us life out of death. And therefore, in our newness and renewed life, in the gratitude that we have, we can serve, not out of obligation or a payment of some debt, but in a desire to live a life that best reflects the love that Christ gave us first.
Dedication: I sent out this link during the Letter to the Congregation this past week, but I am going to provide it to you again.
