Celebrating Youth Sunday at West Tokyo Union Church, was a youth once, thought I could go out and do anything and be anything, had dreams
Dream at age 8: I would be a meteorologist who can warn people about dangerous storms coming their way, help save lives of those around me
Reality at age 39: As a meteorologist who warns people about dangerous storms, learning more about how much more that I need to learn to do the job well, able to reflect back on many things during the 18-year career I have had so far
Diversity: There are so many folks here in different stages of life. Some are young. Some are seasoned (older). Some are figuring out who they are and what they desire to do and their place in this world. Today’s message is going to seem to mean different things to different people, but that’s because today’s passage was written this way.
Explanation: Today’s passage talks to those who are walking with Jesus Christ. The Apostle John is lovingly writing this letter to encourage those who are learning what it means to be a follower of Christ.
Background: The Apostle John, who was one of Jesus’ original twelve students (disciples), wrote this letter. We will see quite similar elements between the Gospel of John and this letter, including the concept of love.
Young people… we’ll get to you in a bit… let’s work through the passage together, and then I’ll get to you because today’s passage talks about you.
Let’s start with the first group of people that John addresses in verse 12: “I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven on account of his name.” Little children - in the Greek, this means little boys and girls - the same word that Jesus used in John 13:33. We all were children once. This is how Jesus sees us - as adopted sons and daughters of God the Father, as brothers and sisters to our Savior. How is this possible? “Because your sins are forgiven on account of his name.” When we are forgiven, we are given this identity - we join the family of God. When we as children didn’t realize who we were, we were forgiven because of Jesus, and we see in verse 14 a similar point here, “I write to you, children, because you know the Father.” John tells them he writes to the “infants” - because they know the Father. Children, if nothing else, still know their parents - the ones who raise them. This basic truth is what we have to realize in our lives - that our sins are forgiven through Christ, and we also know the Father. Your blessing in life is being granted an identity - you know who you are because you know to whom you belong. Therefore, John points out the start to walking with Jesus - we are forgiven and belong to God.
Illustration: In the newsroom one day a few years ago, people were cheering and groaning. Why? World Cup game. Why? Invested and identified with the team. Our lives have meaning when we have an identity. When God our Creator gives us an identity, we realize that we are valuable to God, and our lives have meaning because we are loved by God.
Let’s continue with the second group of people that John addresses. In verse 13: “I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.” John repeats something similar in verse 14: “I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.” For those of you who are seasoned in life, you probably understand this a lot better than us younger ones. John is writing here to those who have lived through life. If your blessing in life is to be granted an identity, then the wisdom you gain in life leads you to know the One who granted you that identity.
Illustration: How many of you know how to ride a bicycle? Some of you might remember your first day. You get on the bike. You might have had training wheels. Then you start to pedal around, maybe wobbling, maybe running into a wall… but when you first start out, you have no experience to go on. As you keep biking and pedaling, you start to understand how to control your bike, how to move around, and how to use your bike in better ways. Along the way, you might get bruised and hurt, but ultimately, you’ll be able to get on that bike and pedal around. Kudos to the mothers… they not only get on their bikes, but they have a kid strapped on them, another kid in the seat behind her, and groceries in the front basket and maybe even holding a couple of them too. That comes with experience.
John points out here that the “fathers” here - it’s not only men… we’re talking about all those who have matured in the faith… will realize who God truly is. Through life, through struggles, through pain, we learn to understand who God is, and we turn to Him. We know more and more about the goodness of our great God, and it gives us hope to do what we were put on this earth to do. This is what we are to strive for - to know God who gave us life.
But… then we come to the “young people” in verses 13 and 14. For you young people here… and those young at heart, this is also the most encouraging part of today’s passage. “I am writing to you, young people, because you have conquered the evil one…. I write to you, young people, because you are strong and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” Now I don’t know about you, but I like it when someone says that I am strong, that I have conquered, that I have overcome. These are some powerful words. People talk about being strong when training at the gym… why? Because that’s the image we want to have, being “strong”.
However, why is John talking about that here? He wasn’t talking about pumping iron or going on long runs to stay in shape. John is talking about our spiritual lives. Young people, you have conquered the evil one. How? Because Jesus has already defeated the evil one. Because your identity is in Christ - you belong to Christ. Therefore, you are empowered to overcome the evil one. As you are growing, you struggle with sin. You fight against the desires of your heart. Jesus gives you the power to overcome that. You are strong because Jesus is strong. Through God’s Word, you will gain wisdom to understand your identity and know the One who granted you that identity.
Here’s the key in all this… verse 14 says “The Word of God abides in you.” We are to abide in God’s Word. What does “abide” mean? It means to “continue, stay with, and keep on.” You want to know what keeps you strong? Staying with God’s Word. This is how we are able to know who God is and how we are to stay strong.
In Proverbs 3, the passage is a father talking to his child. It is not about the dad just saying to his son, “Listen because I’m your daddy.” It’s a loving instruction - because daddy’s been there. The beauty of the church - the body of Christ, is that we all start as little children (babies), and through the loving care of the fathers and mothers in this body, we young people experience and learn from experience, and we all can hold on to God’s Word and overcome and conquer the evil one. We have the Holy Spirit to give us the strength to do this.
And how do we see this appearing in our lives? When we practice the New Commandment, which isn’t “brand new”. The word “new” here is a “fulfillment” and “upgrade” to the old commandment. We are to love one another. We didn’t read this today, but verses 15-17 talk about how we should not love the world or the things in the world. Things in this world do not last. The identity, the love God gives to us, the Word of God - those things do last. The family of God? That lasts. The love - the agapao, sacrificial, committed, decision-based love? That lasts. That’s where the markings of those who are called “fathers” in today’s passage comes from. Do you love God with all of who you are? Do you love your neighbor as you love yourself? Those are the markings of those who have not only conquered the evil one as young people but also know the One who is from the beginning.
Closing Illustration/Testimony: Starting with lots of dreams, thought I could work in New York and be the top meteorologist. First four years of my career were the most challenging. Challenging hours. Sometimes challenging situations. I was bitter and struggled against God during that time. We are going to go through challenging times in life. Yet God worked in my heart to realize He just simply loves me, that He is faithful, that all will be well in Christ. I realized through the challenges of my job and my own heart, God opened my eyes to see how He just loves me just the way I am. God’s Word and the fellowship of my family and the church changed all that. I would never say that I am the “father” listed here. What I have learned, though, that life is all about glorifying God. I have so much more to learn and grow, but I know that in Christ, I am strong. In Christ, I have conquered the evil one. In Christ, I have overcome the evil one. Young people, you are strong in Christ. Young people, you have conquered the evil one in Christ. Young people, you have overcome the evil one in Christ. Abide in Christ and in His Word daily. It is through abiding in Christ that you will know Him who is from the beginning.
