Sermon Text:
Illustration: A few weeks ago, my wife Rachel had an evening appointment to be with some of her colleagues. It’s rare for her to be away from the house in the evenings since we have our young daughters at home, but this was a great opportunity for Rachel to spend some time with her fellow teachers. In order to prepare our daughters, we started telling Cana ahead of time that mommy wasn’t going to be home for that evening but that mommy will be back home after she goes to bed and will see her the next morning. We knew that Cana and Mikayla would be just fine, but… Cana didn’t know that. She said every single day if mommy was going to be gone that night and even asked if mommy could cancel her plan. Cana became a bit anxious about the whole situation. Then comes the actual day, and as we expected, Cana and Mikayla were just fine as our friend babysat them.
Context: When we look at our passage in John 14, we could see something relatively similar. Jesus was speaking to His disciples as He was having His last meal with them before His crucifixion. He knew that after being with them for three years, He was going to separate from them, first in death, and then after His resurrection, His return back to Heaven, and Jesus knew that the disciples were going to be anxious when He left them. Imagine the uncertainty that the disciples must have felt - even though Jesus knew that it was going to be just fine.
Transition: Even though Jesus knows what will come in the future for us, when we journey through life, it’s like a fog of uncertainty clouding our view. And for many of us, it gives us anxiety and worry. But in the midst of this, Jesus is the one who gives us assurance of what is to come. It was during this discussion that Jesus assured the disciples of what was to come, that His return back to Heaven was for an important purpose - to prepare for their arrival in Heaven someday.
Good News: The Good News is that Jesus clearly shows us where He is leading us and gives us great hope. First, Jesus promises us that in Him, we have a home prepared for us, and we can go through life knowing that someday, we will be in the presence of God, and we will be fully at rest. Second, Jesus assures us that because He was here on earth, we who are in Christ are assured of our salvation and our future presence before God. Third, Jesus, by calling us as His own people, a chosen race, and a royal priesthood, He will lead us, His Church, until the very end.
Home: There is a saying that most Americans would understand - “Home is where the heart is”. It’s a pretty straightforward saying that our most secure location as humans is home. Now, it doesn’t mean home in the literal sense for some people as there are broken homes, but it is an innate human need to have a home and be at home. Even in Japanese, the idea of home is deeply rooted, such as the song ふるさと. The last two lines of the first verse goes like this: ゆめはいまも めぐりて、わすれがたき ふるさと, which means “I still dream of those days even now, Oh, how I miss my old country home.” When Jesus tells His disciples that He is preparing a place for them, it is given to us as a promised hope, that it will be the place that we will find full rest. In our current day and age, people wander into so many places, feeling lost or unassured of what lies ahead, and it’s true that life is a very tough thing to go through. Unlike animals and plants where they just do what they were created to do, humans - bearing the image of God - struggle when they do not know what to do in their lives. The Good News is that Jesus gives us hope that as we live our lives on this earth, we don’t live for the sake of living but know that this is a journey that we are on the path to our ultimate destination. Those in Christ are given the assurance that the challenges of this life will not last forever, and the pain and suffering that we endure now will not be in our lives into eternity.
Image of God: We can be assured of this hope because of Jesus. When we look at the passage again, we see Thomas asking Jesus where He is going once He leaves them - which seems like there’s a little bit of separation anxiety going on. Then later on, Phillip asks Jesus to show them the Father, totally missing the fact that God is here because Jesus IS God, bearing the image of God. Jesus, by coming and living among us in the flesh, shows us that God is real and that God truly loves us. It was on this day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the people in Jerusalem, clearly fulfilling the promise Jesus made about the coming of the Paraclete - the Comforter - the One who would guide us into all truth. This once again shows us that Jesus’ promises always come true.
Chosen People: As Jesus leads us from uncertainty to hope, we are called to participate in this story that God is continuing to write. When we look at our passage from 1 Peter, we see that we are a part of this work that God is doing. Peter had been writing to tell his readers to leave a life that is filled with dissent and struggles with each other, to not hold onto malice. Instead, Peter encourages us to seek and crave “spiritual milk” - to taste and see that the Lord is good so that we would grow into salvation. Just like babies are absolutely dependent on milk for their nourishment and growth, we too are to seek after God in this way. This means that we are to pursue Christ, who is the Solid Rock that was rejected by people and yet is the solid foundation in which our faith can hold firm. That doesn’t mean that we will not run into difficulties or doubts with our faith. What it means is that Christ will always be solid, and we can trust in Him no matter what comes our way. We as the Church can trust that Jesus will always lead and guide us. And here’s the thing - we talk a lot about approaching Christ and coming to Him for salvation, but there is another aspect to this - that Christ is calling us to be His chosen people.
Impact: We read here in 1 Peter that we are a royal priesthood. In Christ, we are all priests, that we are all, through Christ, representatives of what God is doing with us and through us in this world of darkness. If we are granted incredible mercy through Christ, then our lives should be different from others who live in this world. Each and every one of us has the important responsibility of proclaiming the Good News of salvation to all those who are around us, that they can receive mercy from the Almighty and Loving God who seeks to call them into salvation. This is how Christ leads His Church - calling us to know who we are in order to proclaim the Good News so that we may all be drawing closer to God through Jesus Christ.
Response: Because Jesus leads His Church, we do not have to deal with separation anxiety from Him. We can face uncertainty about what is ahead because the Holy Spirit guides us as Christ calls us to seek after Him. If we follow His lead, learning to love one another and proclaim the Good News to those around us, this witness will impact the world, a world that is blinded by uncertainty and turmoil. May we look to Christ our King, who is leading us through the fog of life in this world, and may we live as people of hope, proclaiming salvation into our communities so that others may receive grace and mercy today.
