Sermon Text:

1. Illustration: Our older daughter Cana recently celebrated a birthday, and it gave me a chance to reflect on how our kids have been growing. It’s just a blink of an eye, and the kids who were barely big enough to rest fully in your arms have grown up to the point where you realize working out has its perks. But as much as I notice how physically they’ve grown, I also see so much more about their personalities too. How do they interact with their friends? How do they respond to their teachers? How well do they listen to our instructions? How much are they able to freely express themselves and feel confident in who they are?

2. Observation: I realize the more I am parenting our kids that they thrive best when they know that they are loved and are free to explore and grow. When they are scared, when they feel restricted, or when they feel like they can’t do what they want to do, that’s when I see the most negative reactions from them. They thrive when they are loved and supported - they struggle when they feel abandoned or suppressed.

3. Tension: Here’s the interesting reality. Some of our most formative situations actually come from times of crisis. Our faith tends to become complacent when things go well, and so some of the times we truly grow come from situations that are stressful, challenging, and difficult. However, if we are constantly in a state of crisis, we find ourselves becoming hardened in ways that prevent us from being able to grow - in a sense only trying to create scars so that we don’t hurt any more. There lies the tension - we need challenges in order to grow, but we also grow better when we are not living in survival mode. When we are able to find love in community and wisdom in the truth of God’s Word, our souls are nourished, and we are able to freely explore and grow in the world that God has created.

4. Love: When we look at our passage from the Gospel of John, we see that Christ is the source of love that nourishes us. And through His provision, we are given life abundantly.

   (1) Christ is the way to assurance and safety. Just as Jesus mentioned that the sheep hears their shepherd’s voice, Christ as our Good Shepherd gives us assurance and safety. I mentioned that our kids thrive when they feel safe and secure. Sheep are the exact same way. They don’t even like rushing waters - it scares them. They need calm, still waters in order to drink. Christ grants us the assurance that we need, and we can trust that He loves and cares for us.
   (2) Christ is the way to have all of our needs met. Jesus did not come just to have a visit. He came to fulfill our ultimate need - to be fully restored in communion with Him and with one other, and that could only be done through Jesus’ death and resurrection. By that, God is glorified. 
   (3) Christ is the way to new life - a life abundant. Because of Jesus, our lives have deep and real purpose, and it’s a life that gives us an eternal perspective.

5. Results: When Christ is the center of our relationship, it creates an incredible community, one that listens, learns, unites, loves, and cares.

   (1) When we look at Acts 2, right before our passage, we see the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. And after Peter’s sermon, 3000 came to faith that day. And then our passage picks up. The believers were devoted to listening and learning what the apostles were teaching. The believers came together, united in fellowship through the breaking of bread and through prayer. They came to love and care for each other, sharing to make sure everyone had what they needed. This led to them praising God and having peace with others, and this community grew.

   (2) Because Christ united those together in faith, the community had much joy. This is just one of the amazing parts of having an abundant life in Christ. When we are given a place of love and grace, when we are able to find peace made possible by Jesus, we can see this growth.

6. WTUC: I am so thankful for West Tokyo Union Church and the opportunity to be able to serve this incredible community. We celebrate 60 years of God’s faithfulness to us at WTUC. I wish that we could see more communities like this around the world, willing to love each other regardless of our faith traditions because we are rooted in Christ. I am also so thankful for all those who have come before us - and some still with us (because some of us have been here for decades!). When we see God continuing to show faithfulness to WTUC, we are shown that our King indeed does love His sheep.

7. Provision: I am also thankful that the Good Shepherd has also provided “undershepherds” - leaders - who have cared for our congregation. During this past year, we have had the chance to reconnect with former pastors and members during our celebration - and we plan to have more coming up in the next few weeks. (Today, we are thankful to have Rev. Susan Townsley visiting us. She served as co-pastor of WTUC from 2011 to 2013 along with Rev. Teresa Sherrill. We asked Rev. Susan to just say a few words about her time at WTUC and how she has been doing since her time here.)

Conclusion: In the end, I want to say that our King, who has risen from the dead, loves His sheep by providing what we need - including a community that helps us find love and grace and to experience that peace that allows us to grow and have an abundant life in Him.
