Introduction
Have you ever tried mixing water and cooking oil? If not try it sometime. Take an empty 2-Liter bottle, and fill it up half way with just plain water, and the other half fill up with vegetable oil. Then try shaking that bottle up and mixing those two things together. What’s going to happen? Well, you can shake that bottle all day, but as soon as you stop shaking it, the oil and the water are going to separate from each other in a matter of minutes, if not seconds. Why? Back in High School Chemistry Class I learned that oil and water are “ opposites” of each other. These two substances have a totally different chemical make-up from each other, which makes it impossible for them to mix together. Opposites just don’t mix. But what about the Opposites Attract Idea? It is when people with contrasting characteristics are drawn from each other, for instance – One is a night owl – early bird, talker and reserved, out going – home body etc. but research inidicates that in reality similarity is a stronger predictor of successful, lasting relationship. Everyday we see ordinary examples of opposites, shoes (left and right) chopsticks, even in our readings and many more, there are a lot of different things we see opposites.
We could talk how even in the Old Testament there are examples of opposites too. Ecclesiastes 3:1-4,” There is a time for everything, and season for every activity under heaven, a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal , a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh.”
New Testament example of opposite is Romans, first 11 chapters of Romans discuss Christians faith and unbelief, humility and pride, yes these things are opposites of each other, however beginning with chapter 12 belief is changed to practice. Romans 12:14 “Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse”

There’s this story of a missionary named Ruth, in Southeast Asia met Fran, a Muslim raised in radical Islam, she grew up hating Christians, and she began avoiding Ruth, however Ruth didn’t give up.
She occasionally saw Fran, always trying to steer their conversations toward God. Eventually Fran invited Ruth to her home, an opportunity Ruth approached with caution and prayer.
The visit went smoothly and Ruth shared more about the gospel with Fran. Days after Ruth and family visited Fran again in her place, as they were about to leave, Fran offered her tea. Ruth, not wanting to reject Fran’s hospitality, accepted. Three hours later, Ruth awoke with sharp pains in her stomach that kept getting worse. The pain made her dizzy and she could barely walk. At daybreak, her husband rented a car and took her to the hospital. The first hospital wouldn’t serve Ruth because she was a Christian. Same for the second. This is unfortunately common for Southeast Asians in a community predominantly Islam, they are hostile to those living boldly for Jesus. Ruth was unconscious when her husband rushed her to a third hospital. Thankfully, they accepted her. After three days in a coma, Ruth woke up in the hospital to sounds of her family praising God. They didn’t think she would live. The doctor was confident she was poisoned. The type of poison they found in Ruth’s body is commonly used in murder among a local tribe. The doctor asked if they knew anyone who wanted to poison her. Ruth was shocked: that was Fran’s tribe. The tea - it had almost killed her. However, I remembered she said,“ Jesus taught me to forgive and pray for our enemies . I knew God had forgiven me and saved me so I could show love to others.” Ruth recovered, and started praying more for Fran and family for salvation. Days passed, and Fran’s daughter got sick, and they called her for prayer. She and husband went, and the daughter recovered. The daughter received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
While Old Testament of equal retribution, or equal retaliation - Leviticus 24:20 “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”, New Testament - Jesus Christ set a high standard: “Love your enemies , do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you” Luke 6:27-28, These are the examples of “Strange Opposites” “If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners or unbelievers love those who love them.”

And in so doing, God will not only heal your heart but theirs too, Because truth be told, if we really try to understand others way past their hurtful words and actions we begin to realize that “hurt people hurt others”, it’s not the person but their brokenness, and all the sharp edges that cause them to hurt others too, when we come to God to bless them, our hearts become a tender soil where love will grow and bear fruits, it’s a heart that yields the nature of Christ, the ultimate example and manifestation of unconditional love. Christ who suffered for you is your example. Follow in his steps, he never sinned, never told a lie, never answered back when insulted, when he suffered , He did not threaten to get even, He left his case in the hands of God who always judges fairly. 1 Peter 2:21-23.
Jesus’ teachings in many ways is meant to guide us to live and experience the abundance of his love, protection to live life he designed it to be, but the way of Jesus is the exact opposite of the way of the world.
The world says, aim to please yourself and you'll be happy and fulfilled, the scriptures says no, aim to please others, not being a people pleaser or just trying to make sure everyone likes you, Paul according to Romans is saying aim for the good of other people and not just aim at doing whatever is pleasurable. The Apostle Paul is actually live a meaningful life, that's how we’re created to live and if you're in Christ, you've been redeemed, saved, set apart from the world. If you're aiming to please yourself you're living in opposition to the way that God has not only designed you as a human being to do and be but you're living in opposition to the direct commands of your Savior King who loves you and says this is how you glorify me this is what will lead to most joy .
The most popular clinical psychologist in our world today who's not a Christian will flat-out tell you if you want to be happy don't aim for happiness, for just doing whatever is pleasurable, you won't be happy if you do that. He says aim for what is meaningful, and then you'll be happy and that's even evidence of God's common grace. In other words, if you aim to do whatever feels good, well, that “make me feel good doesn’t last”. So instead aim at the truth (Scriptures), and that will lead to your joy and blessed life. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word and for the profound truths which remind us that our lives are to be transformed by your love. Lord, give us the grace to live in way that reflects your heart. Help us to bless those who persecute us and never curse them. Enable us to rejoice and to weep with those who weep, showing true compassion and empathy in our community. We pray for your strength to live out these difficult, yet essential commands in Jesus’ name, Amen.
