Sermon Text:
Happy New Year: Dear sisters and brothers, grace and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Happy new year to you. I know we’re already almost halfway through January, but it is the first opportunity I am getting to see you this year. I pray that this year will be a blessed one for you, to grow in the knowledge, wisdom, and riches in Christ our Lord.
Last Week: We started off this New Year with a message on Radical Love from Rev. Dr. Paul Shew. In this sermon, Rev. Paul asked a critical question: What should we be known for as followers of Jesus? His conclusion, which we see rooted in Christ’s command for us to love, is that we should be defined by our love for one another, not just in word or theological doctrine but in action - an action that leads those around us to say, “I don’t fully understand their faith, but I cannot deny the love I see in them.” Rev. Paul stated that this is how the early Christians changed the world—not through power or prestige, but through lives shaped by the love of Christ.
Today: Today’s message was actually planned separately before Rev. Paul gave his message, but interestingly enough, our passages from the Revised Common Lectionary for today will lead us to dig into the theological foundation of this radical love that we are called to live out.
Illustration: Just this past week, a tragedy unfolded in the US state of Minnesota, where a woman was shot and killed by an officer of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE. This has been a flashpoint as the current administration has been driving to implement an immigration policy that is defined more about preserving rights for those who are defined as “Americans” on a more narrow basis and kicking out others who aren’t, and that agenda has sent these ICE agents into major cities, causing clashes with protestors and local government officials. One thing that I am observing through the lens of social media is how the events of this week have sharply divided once again those who are opposed to the President’s agenda and those who support it. People have drawn conclusions quickly and fiercely arguing their points primarily out of their political beliefs, mainly based on how they interpreted videos recorded on the scene. Social media has continued to serve as a mirror for our society, which is defined by flash judgment (with more opinion than facts) and a drive to be “winning”, to be filled with pride for “getting their opponents” with flimsy analysis and sharp words.
World: We live in a world where we are driven to have harsh and fierce responses, pushing us further away from each other and toward those with whom we agree with, and trying to define our world in a way that is comfortable for “us”, and that us only includes those who agree with us. We see it happening in so many places, not just the United States. This attitude leads us to want to beat others into submission, to keep to ourselves, and to feel comfortable in our surroundings with people who look, think, and act like we do. It certainly does not look like that radical love that Christ has commanded us to live out in our lives.
Christ: That is because Christ is the opposite of what we would ever want in our fallen human nature. Unlike our world, which also includes us, Christ brings a gentle response for justice, a generous and gracious Gospel to the world, and a push in His love for us to grow by expanding our welcome mat to bring others who do not look, think, or act like we do. It is countercultural and counteractive to how our world is functioning today - how the world has always functioned apart from Christ.
Isaiah: In our first passage from Isaiah 42, we are reading the first of the servant song passages, and through these passages, we see how Christ is defined. The first part of Isaiah discussed the coming of Christ into a world that is condemned and judged for its rejection of the ways of God - particularly by the people of Israel. Then we enter into this passage with a reading of prophecies to a people who have been exiled and separated from their homeland - an opportunity to reset as people are shaken from what has been comfortable for them. It is in this comfort and encouragement that we read about who Christ is and what He is to bring into our broken world.
Unlike the world, Christ brings a gentle response. Filled with the Spirit of God, Christ doesn’t cry out with His voice but steadfastly and faithfully brings forth justice. He won’t break down bruised reeds or quench dimly burning candles. Christ isn’t the business of “gotchas” to be “winning”.
Christ comes as a covenant to the people. By coming into the world, Christ’s work and dominion is not a one-time action but a persistent presence. Being called in righteousness, Christ comes as a light to the nations. He did not come solely for the people of Israel but as a presence that is shining forth into and throughout the world. This is Good News, because we are no longer stuck in our endless cycle of broken promises and actions of darkness perpetuated by broken people.
When Christ comes, He not only comes as a promise but with actual deliverable actions. When Christ first came, He brought sight to the blind and freedom to the imprisoned. This was promised hundreds of years before He came, and it came true when Christ was here on earth during His first ministry.
In the end, Christ’s presence was a declaration of something new. It was to transform and change our world. No longer were we to operate in the old ways of the world but in the new ways of grace and love.
Acts: Our second passage today is just one glimpse of how Christ’s presence impacted our world. The Apostle Peter, who was with Christ during His time on earth, was brought to Cornelius, a military official with the Roman army. This was in a series of instances we read in the book of Acts where the Good News of Christ was no longer confined to the Jews but to people of other nations and ethnicities. Peter, a Jew, experienced an incredible vision where God declared that people are not defined as clean or unclean based on their nationality. Then when Peter was summoned to Cornelius’ house, we see this excerpt of his sermon.
Peter preaches that Christ does not separate or favor people by ethnicity when it comes to salvation because Christ is Lord of all. Verse 35 says, “Anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.” It was a message of peace that Christ proclaimed, first to the people of Israel but then spreading beyond them.
This all started when Christ was baptized at the Jordan River - which is what we recognize today as a church festival - the Baptism of the Lord. From there, Peter states that Christ did good and healed all oppressed by the devil - a fulfillment of the prophecy that we just read in Isaiah 42. Christ came to bring sight to us who were spiritually blind and freedom to us who were spiritually imprisoned.
Because Christ died and rose again, those who believe in Him receive forgiveness in His name. In verse 43, the Good News being testified by all the prophets is “everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” And this is the truth that is declared to all by believers who are witnesses to this Good News. It is because we have been loved by God, because we have been given an inexplicable gift of grace, that we are able to radically love each other and the world. It is because of Christ that we are called to love in this incredible way.
Foundation: For us to radically love, we must first be loved radically. Christ has done that - in identifying with us in baptism, in dying for us because of our sin, and in rising again so that we may live anew. Our Lord and Savior calls us now to reflect Him in this radical love so that as a light to the nations, Christ’s body can bring this Good News to the world.
Gospel: Because of Christ, we have been given something precious - a new life with a chance to give a new love. Because of Christ, we are no longer living with a selfish love but instead loving with a radical love. A love that the world still does not yet know or even fully understand - 2000 years after Christ’s presence on earth.
Baptism: Because we are a part of this incredible cloud of witnesses, since we have been baptized into Christ’s body, we are sprinkled clean and washed anew. Our baptism is an important reminder to us of the work of Christ, and this sacrament serves as a sign and seal of this covenant, this promise of Christ’s continued work in our lives and in our world. We testify to the world through our baptism that we die with Christ, and we are brought to life in Christ. May we take this day to remember our own baptism as we reflect upon this message.
Response: WTUC as a community has been seeking to love our neighbors and declaring this Good News for 60 years. Here’s the thing about West Tokyo Union Church - we don’t agree on everything. We don’t sit on the same page on every single issue, but what we agree upon is this Good News - that Christ is our Lord and Savior, and that in His name, we find forgiveness of sins and eternal life. This is what we still proclaim today. Our union in Christ with our Savior and with one another is defined by our love for each other - the love that Christ commanded His disciples before His death. And as we start this New Year, just as Rev. Paul challenged us last week, may we obey our Savior’s command to radical love, for our world needs to see that our world needs a Savior and indeed has a Savior, the Savior - Jesus Christ.
Conclusion: Christ came as a light to the nations, and we are able to see nations represented at WTUC and in the body of Christ. May we live out the radical love that has been given to us, and may we root ourselves in Christ’s incredible work of salvation so that we may radically love those around us - so that the world may know this Good News.
