Sermon Text:
Last Week: We’ve been going through a little bit of a mini-series since the beginning of this year about Christ’s command to radically love. Rev. Paul helped bring us into focus about how our love is a testimony to Christ’s love, that the world is to know that we are Christ’s disciples - and that Christ’s welcome for us is also a welcome to a broken world. Last week, we dug deeper into Christ’s call as a light to the nations and how we as His body continue to carry out this work in the world today. Because Christ came to this world for the purpose to save the world, our radical love for each other and our neighbors proclaims this truth to those who need to hear it.
Today: We are going to dig in a little deeper into the mission of the church, helping us to tie together the mission of God and how Christ has given us, the church, all the tools that we need to love and grow as faithful disciples in Christ and the ability to continue shining Christ’s light to the nations.
Question: Let me start us off today with a question. Why are you here at WTUC? Why is it important for you to be here on this Sunday morning? I’m sure if we took a survey right now, there would be a lot of different answers. Maybe you’re here because it’s the right thing to do as a Christian - that we are supposed to obey God’s command to observe the Sabbath and keep it holy. Yes, that’s a valid reason. Maybe you’re here because you love the community that you’ve found here. Some of you have been here for 10, 20, even 30 years. During those years, you have come to love and care for each other. And that’s how we should be growing as the body of Christ. This is also a valid reason. Maybe the weekly opportunity to worship the Almighty God with fellow sisters and brothers, the chance to have something different from the rest of the week, the music, maybe the sermon, maybe the opportunity to pray for each other… yes, yes, yes, these are all valid reasons. But then, here’s the bigger question - why does it have to be… a Sunday morning service? We can keep the Sabbath, connect with each other, sing, listen to God’s Word, and pray in many different ways - and at different times during the week as well. WTUC doesn’t even physically gather every week - we currently have two in-person services a month and meet virtually online the other Sundays. What is the reason why the church actually exists?
Christ: For us to be able to answer the question about the church, we have to go to the Source, the Head of the Church, and that is Jesus Christ. When we look at our Scripture passage from 1 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul lays out Christ as the root, source, and foundation of the Church. The Apostle Paul was writing this letter to the church in Corinth, and this church was far from perfect. When you read through the letter, Paul had to write quite a bit about the issues that the church had to endure, and eventually, we find out in 2 Corinthians that Paul had to chew out members of the church in a letter that we no longer have. And yet, look at this introduction that Paul writes to the church in 1 Corinthians.
Paul gives thanks to God for this church in Corinth because it is in Christ, the church experiences the grace of God, and it is through Christ that the people of God are enriched. That means in their words, in their knowledge, in their spiritual gifts, it is Christ that pours these things into the hearts and lives of those in the church. Even though this church in Corinth, just like every other local church that was there and has come since then, has had flaws and problems, Paul still thanks God for them - the church - because of Christ.
Paul writes that the church of God is sanctified in Christ Jesus, and in that, the members of the church of God are called to be saints - all those in every place who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. For Christians everywhere, we are set apart - which is what sanctified means - and we are to live our lives as saints, people who are indeed set apart by Christ. Therefore, the church is more than just a group of believers or a place to gather or an event on Sundays. We are disciples of Christ who have been set apart for the work of God. Through Christ, we see a transformation in our words and in our understanding of how God is working in this world, in what we say, in what we do, and in how we love - these all have been changed.
Isaiah: If we see Christ holding such incredible power to set us believers apart as the church and transform us in a way that impacts the way we speak, think, and love, then it’s important for us to understand the heart of Christ. Today’s passage from Isaiah helps us to do that. We read the first “Servant Song” passages last week describing Christ as the Servant of God, and today, we get to read the second “Servant Song”. Today’s passage helps us see more of why Christ, the Servant, came to this world.
Christ’s mission to the world - As we begin this passage, we read the call that goes beyond the border of Israel. Instead of “Comfort, comfort, my people” that we read in Isaiah 40, we see a call to the coastlands. As Christ is called into this important mission, it is announced to the world, for it is the whole world - and not just Israel - that needs this Savior. Christ, the Son of God, also is serving as a Servant of God - one intimately connected with God who has humbled Himself to fully serve.
Christ’s mission in glorifying God - As Christ is shaped to serve in this mission, we also read the reason why. Just as Israel was to be restored in order to glorify God, in Christ, we will see the fulfillment of this glorification of God. Christ is taking on this mission ultimately to glorify God. This is key for us personally too, for we exist on this earth to honor and glorify God in all that we do.
Christ’s suffering in fulfilling His mission - There is a reality check here, though. It’s not all smooth sailing for The Servant, for He is going to suffer while carrying out His mission, but it is because of the mission that the Servant will push forward until it is fulfilled. Through this mission, Christ is also glorified, for as the Son glorifies the Father, the Father will also glorify the Son. This unique relationship that we see in the Godhead helps us to see that our salvation, the mission that Christ is to fulfill, was worth it. Christ will suffer, but in suffering, we are given new life, and God is glorified.
Christ’s mission to bring salvation to the world (light to the nations) - The fulfillment of this mission will impact not just the people of Israel but also beyond Israel. We read in this passage that it’s “too light a thing [for the Servant]… to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel”. God’s great plan is for the Servant to bring people from all different nations to salvation, and once again, we read that Christ is to be a light to the nations. Kings and nations all around the world will bow down to the victorious Christ.
Equipping: Christ came and has now returned to the Father, and for this mission to continue, Christ has equipped the us - the Church. We read in 1 Corinthians that Christ has equipped the church with spiritual gifts, perseverance to the end, and a fellowship with the faithful God and His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Spiritual gifts - Paul actually digs deeply into spiritual gifts in chapter 12. And some of us are more familiar with this topic than others. I think many of us, as it had been in the past, that spiritual gifts are so important that it seemingly determines who we are and how we serve within the church - that it creates some kind of hierarchy within. And yet, if you read the rest of chapter 12 and also into chapter 13, you can follow Paul’s central point here that every one of us has a part to play, and we are all part of this body of Christ. And what glues that together? Love. Everything that we do to serve and to honor God and the people of God is love. Some spiritual gifts are more obvious (v. 8-10) - utterance of wisdom, utterance of knowledge, faith, healing, working of powerful deeds, prophecy, discernment of spirits, tongues, interpretation of tongues. And yet, these are not exhaustive. Further down in verse 28, we see Paul listing some of the roles within the church, such as apostles, prophets, teachers, then those performing deeds of power, healing, assistance, leadership, and those speaking in tongues. But at verse 31, Paul says, “But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.” Which means while these gifts are important, there are gifts greater than just what is listed, and in the end, what is the more excellent way? Love. And so in the end, our love for Christ and for one another should lead us to serve, using the spiritual gifts that we have been given in order to edify the church and then proclaiming to the world how great our God is and the love Christ brings for our salvation.
Perseverance to the end - On top of this, the fact that Christ has equipped the church the ability to endure and persevere to the end should be greatly encouraging to us. Christ, as the head of the church, will not abandon His body. No matter what comes our way, no matter what attacks may come against us, the Church endures, and our mission to declare the Good News of God will push forward. Now that doesn’t mean churches don’t close. That doesn’t mean that churches don’t struggle or even fall apart. But the greater picture is that Christ will continue to be with us, and the visible body of the church is critical for us to push forward to the end. We at WTUC are in a season of discernment of where the Lord may be leading us in the upcoming months and years, but we should be encouraged to see that for 2000 years, the Church has endured because Christ is faithful. May we take encouragement in this truth as we continue our mission as the church.
Fellowship with the faithful God and His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord - We saw earlier how key glorifying God is in this mission that Christ has. What is critical for the church is that we are blessed to be in fellowship with our faithful God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Being the church is not an optional part of our faith journey. Being a disciple of Christ means we ARE the church, and we are in fellowship with our God. Christ is the head of the church, and as Christ serves as the head, all good things flow from Him into the body, and we are able to see the blessings that impact us through this fellowship. Therefore, it is so important for us to not stop gathering, for as we fellowship with each other, we also have fellowship in Christ. These are all interconnected for our good. When our love for each other grows in this, we declare to the world about our loving Savior.
Missio Deo: There is this concept called the Missio Deo - the mission of God. We see in Scripture this important theme - that God is on mission, and that mission is to bring salvation to the world, to people of all nations, and in Christ, we are invited to participate in this mission. This is the mission of God, and therefore, it is the mission of the church to participate in reflecting this light to the nations.
Practical: There are practical implications in this mission. It’s not just “love and tell”. This mission should drive us to serve more, seek opportunities to support each other, and ultimately reach out to our community here. We talked at the beginning about the many different reasons we might be gathering at church and why we exist. But if Christ is on mission, seeking to save people who need His salvation, then our church should bear witness to this truth in its core. When we engage in radical love, people should want to join us. Our church should not exist for the sake of existing but should be the embodiment of who Christ is.
Conclusion: Radical love in Christ is deeper than just love love love. It is rooted in a radically loving Savior who is on mission to bring salvation to the ends of the earth. Christ called us to be a part of this, to be a part of the work in being a light to the nations. May we at WTUC seek to push forward in this call for us to radically love as the church by continuing to gather as the people of God and then move forth into the world so that people may come to be transformed in Christ. Amen.
