Sermon Text:
February: We’ve now come to the second week of the second month of 2026. I’m curious to know… how many of you made “New Years Resolutions” at the beginning of this year? Maybe it’s a decision to work out more and eat better. Maybe it’s a decision to read more. Maybe it’s changing your schedule to wake up earlier and go to bed at a decent time. Maybe it’s using your smartphone or computer less. So… how many of you have been able to stick with those resolutions? It’s an annual refrain - at the end of December, we reflect back on the year and way hoping that we could have done something better, and then in January, we make those resolutions. By February, many of us have fallen off the wagon in terms of our resolutions. Why is it that we aren’t able to commit to these resolutions? A lot of people say that it’s our faltering motivations - that we aren’t motivated enough. Motivation is certainly important, but motivation doesn’t actually sustain change - it simply starts change. Others say that it’s because of discipline - that we aren’t disciplined enough to follow through. And discipline is critical to change. Without discipline, there would be no set pattern to make any change. However, we all start off with good discipline, but once again, things falter off in the end. What we realize is that for us to have true transformation, we need something much deeper that needs to change - something deep inside us that feeds our motivation, feeds our discipline, in order for us to see change and transformation.
Reflection: Over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking about the centrality of Christ and how because of Christ, we are called to radically love. And I think many of us know this in our minds, that when we hear this message, we nod our heads in acceptance and believe that yes, this is true. We need to radically love because of Christ’s radical love for us and Christ’s call for us to radically love each other and our neighbors. But we know there is that neighbor who is hard to love. We know there’s a colleague who is really difficult to deal with. And yet we are called to love. Are we lacking motivation? Not necessarily. We know it’s true that Christ calls us to love, and we want to love radically. Are we lacking discipline? Possibly, but we know what it means to love others. We’ve done it before. That means it’s something much deeper within us that is needing transformation, and our Scripture passages help us to see how we need to be changed from the inside out, and that is all rooted in Christ.
Christ Fulfills Law: When we look at Matthew 5, Jesus says clearly that His role in coming is to fulfill the law and the prophets. All the things promised about Christ, the Messiah, the Savior, are coming true in Him. He came in order to fulfill all righteousness, and therefore, while we are certainly going to break the law because we are fallen, Jesus will never fail. Because Jesus never fails, being the Son of God, He is the One who fulfills not only His righteousness in His obedience but also our righteousness in His death and resurrection. In verse 20, Jesus says that we can never enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless our righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees. It’s interesting that a lot of people read this as - “we must correctly perform the way the scribes and Pharisees obeyed the Law”. However, Christ is talking about something deeper - that we have to face the truth that it is impossible for us to actually perform everything perfectly because the core of who we are is fallen. Only through Jesus Christ and His work of salvation will we be able to surpass the righteousness of the Pharisees and scribes. Their righteousness is actually not all that righteous, for they too are fallen people. Christ, in fulfilling the Law, applies righteousness to us in our salvation, and that is what exceeds the righteousness of the Pharisees and scribes.
Christ Fills Our Brokenness: We live in a world that tells us that our value comes from what we do and what we can contribute to the world. Yet when we look at 1 Corinthians, Paul says that when he came to the church in Corinth, he brought just one message to proclaim - Christ crucified. It’s not a huge complicated point that Paul was making; he was pointing out that the message was about Jesus - all about Jesus.
Christ Transforms by the Spirit: And yet, even though it’s all about Jesus, it’s actually hard for people to understand this. In order for us to actually understand and accept this truth, it requires us to understand God’s wisdom, which is actually unknown to us unless the Holy Spirit reveals it to us. Ultimately, this means for us to accept Christ, we must have the mind of Christ - transformed by the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, what does that mean? It doesn’t mean… no matter what we do, it doesn’t matter… Instead, it means that we must be recipients of God’s grace and wisdom, and we must be transformed from who we were on the inside to who we are to become, renewed creatures in Christ. In order to do this, we must humbly accept that nothing that we can do resolves our problem of sin and brokenness. Only true transformation will make this all possible.
Christ Uses Us: In our transformation, what’s incredible is that instead of sidestepping us, Christ invites us to be a part of this process. When Christ transforms us from the inside, it has an impact on who we are on the outside.
Seasoning: When we go back to Matthew 5, we see how Christ tells us that we are the salt of the earth. Now, salt is interesting. Everybody here has likely used salt in cooking or at the very least has tasted salt in their food. It’s such a critical ingredient in so many things - both in cooking and in baking. In order for salt to be effective, it has to have its characteristic taste, even if it is used to help sweeten something (sounds counterintuitive, but it is actually the case). When Christ is telling us that we are the salt of the earth, who we are should be apparent to those around us. Salt is salt not because it has made itself taste in a certain way but because it is a property or characteristic of the salt itself. In the same way, when Christ is calling us to be the salt of the earth, it means that as we are transformed into the image of Christ, our love, our actions, our behavior must have the characteristics of those who are following Christ. People should see Jesus when they see what we do in our lives.
Lighting: Christ also tells us that we are the light of the world. Now, for us today, light is something that we take for granted. We flip a switch (or even say a command if you have a smart light), and we have light. You can easily light up an entire room with the right amount of light at night. But back during Jesus’ time, light was not so easily available. A lamp had to be lit by hand, and that light was limited in how much light it produced, and so it had to be put high on a lampstand in order for a room to be lit. So light was precious - but even a little light at night was important, and that is the point that Christ is making. The impact that we have when our transformed lives display the love of Christ is just like that light - filling a room and bringing light to those around us. Ultimately, our lives should point to God and bring glory to Him through what we do. Again, our actions should come not from the motivation of just “doing the right thing” but from a transformed heart that honors God in our actions.
What does this mean for us? I mentioned at the beginning of this message about how we may struggle to actually love the way that Christ calls us to love. Deep inside us, we need to be changed, and for us to be changed, we need Christ to transform us from the inside out. In order for this to happen, it requires us to humbly accept that we need help that only Christ can give. We need to accept that transformation is necessary, and only the Holy Spirit can open our minds to the wisdom and understanding to the wisdom of God. When we do that, we are able to fully entrust ourselves into the work that God is doing in our lives. When that transformation happens, we see that appearing in our actions, in what we do, and in how we love. When we are able to radically love, we are able to see that God has been working in our lives.
WTUC: I mentioned last week about how the Lord has been using WTUC for the past 60 years, and I want to bring this point up again today. This community has served the western part of Tokyo for six decades, and we have been a church that has welcomed people from all different faith traditions in Christ. This community would not be possible if the members of this church were not being transformed by the Holy Spirit. Being the body of Christ shapes us to better understand the wisdom of God and to support each other in learning to love as Christ has called us to love. May we continue to honor our Father in Heaven through our transformed lives from the inside out so that the people around us will taste and see that the Lord is good. Amen.

この話を聞いて、頭では「その通りだ」と分かっている人は多いと思います。話を聞きながら、うなずいて、「確かにそうだ」と思います。
キリストが私たちを本気で愛してくださったから、私たちも人を本気で愛するように呼ばれている。お互いを、そして隣人を愛するように、と。
でも同時に、正直に思い当たる人もいるはずです。
どうしても愛するのが難しい隣人。
一緒にいるのが本当に大変なクラスメートや同僚。
それでも、私たちは「愛しなさい」と言われています。
これは、やる気が足りないからでしょうか？

WTUCについて
先週も少し触れましたが、主がこの60年間、WTUCを用いてこられたことについて、今日もう一度お話ししたいと思います。
この教会は、60年にわたって東京西部に仕え、さまざまな信仰背景を持つ人々を受け入れてきました。
この共同体は、教会の一人ひとりが聖霊によって変えられていなければ、決して成り立ちませんでした。
キリストの体として共に歩む中で、私たちは神の知恵をより深く理解し、キリストが求める愛を学ぶために、お互いを支え合っています。
