When Scripture Becomes Living Word

What is the Bible For?

We often assume we know the answer to the question, "What is the Bible for?". We recognize its authority and its importance to our faith, yet in our modern world, we frequently see it used in ways that feel more like a burden than a blessing. Too often, the Bible is treated as a legal rulebook, a collection of prooftexts to win arguments, or even a weapon to defend specific moral or political positions. When Scripture is used this way, detached from its heart, it stops opening hearts and begins closing them; it stops leading people to Christ and starts functioning as a substitute for Him.

Authentic Christianity, however, does not treat Scripture as a tool for religious control. Instead, it is a living faith rooted in the person of Jesus Christ. Today, we explore three scripture scenes that are like three movements that reveal the true purpose of the Bible: Formation, Revelation, and Transformation.

Scripture as Formation

Our first movement begins with the Apostle Paul’s teaching in 2 Timothy. We are familiar with the claim that all Scripture is "inspired by God" and "useful for teaching," but we often overlook the why. Paul states the purpose clearly: "so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work".

The emphasis here is not on filling our heads with data, but on shaping our lives. Scripture is for training and the formation of character. If the Bible were merely information, the best debater or the person with the most verses memorized would "win". But because Scripture is formation, the question changes:

• Am I becoming more like Christ?
• Am I being shaped by the story of God?
• Am I being trained in righteousness? 

The purpose of Scripture is not domination; it is discipleship.

Revelation through the Living Word

The second movement takes us to the road to Emmaus. Here we find two disciples who knew the Scriptures and the promises of Israel, yet they were walking in grief and confusion. They knew the text, but they did not know its meaning. It was only when the risen Christ walked alongside them and opened the whole story—revealing that the Scriptures were always moving toward Him—that the text came alive.

This is the key to a modern, Christ-centered hermeneutic: Christ is the center and the key through whom all Scripture is rightly understood. We must be careful not to fall into the "leaven of the Pharisees," who revered the text but used it to draw boundaries and defend their own righteousness. Jesus rejected this legalistic use of Scripture that loses sight of love, mercy, and justice. For us, the center is no longer a legal code, but Christ as the fulfillment. We do not read the Bible as a flat collection of commands; we read the whole witness of Scripture through the lens of the Gospel and the self-giving love of Jesus.

Transformation at the Well

Finally, we move to the well in Samaria, where Jesus encounters a woman seeking water. Their conversation quickly turns to religious authority: Which "mountain" is the right place to worship? Which system is correct?. This is an old question that we still ask today: Which denomination is right? Who has the better verses?

Jesus shatters this framework entirely. He shifts the focus from religious rules about sacred places to the heart of God, declaring that true worshippers will worship in "spirit and truth". God is not looking for people who can win arguments, but for worshippers whose lives have been transformed by the Living Word. The Samaritan woman was not changed by a codebook; she was transformed by an encounter with Christ, who met her in her woundedness and restored her dignity.

Living as True Worshippers

So, what is the Bible for? It is for the formation of character, the revelation of Christ, and the transformation of life. Authentic Christianity reads Scripture as the living witness that leads us to Christlikeness and frees us to live in spirit and truth.

As we go into this week, let us put this into practice:

1. Read for Transformation: When you read Scripture, don't just ask "What is the rule?" Ask "How is Christ being revealed?" and "What kind of person is this passage inviting me to become?".

2. Resist Using Scripture as a Hammer: In an age of slogans and ideological religion, resist the temptation to use the Bible to win arguments.

3. The Test of Love: Ask whether your reading of the Bible is making you more loving, truthful, merciful, and just.

If our reading makes us harsher or more self-righteous, something has gone wrong. But when Scripture becomes the Living Word, our eyes open and our hearts burn. God is still speaking, and in Christ, the Word becomes a source of life that makes us new.

今日の説教では、聖書の真の目的を明らかにする三つの点、「育成・形成（Formation）」、「啓示（Revelation）」、「変容（Transformation）」について考えます 。

形成（Formation）としての聖書

第一の点は、テモテへの手紙二における使徒パウロの教えから始まります 。私たちは「聖書はすべて神の霊の導きによるもの」であり「教えに役立つ」という言葉をよく知っていますが、その「目的」を見落としがちです 。パウロはその目的を明確に述べています。「神に仕える者が、あらゆる善い業を行うことができるように、十分に整えられるため」であると 。

ここで重要となる点は、私たちの頭をデータで満たすことではなく、「生き方」を形作ること（形成）にあります 。聖書は人格を訓練し、形作るためのものです 。もし聖書が単なる情報の集まりであれば、議論が上手な人や暗唱が得意な人が「勝ち」ということになります 。しかし、聖書の本質が「形成」であるならば、問いは次のように変わります 。

1. 私はよりキリストに似た者へと変えられているか？ 

2. 私は神の物語によって形作られているか？ 

3. 私は正義（正しさ）において訓練されているか？ 

聖書の目的は「支配」ではなく「弟子訓練（ディサイプルシップ）」なのです 。

生ける言葉による啓示（Revelation）

第二の点は、エマオへの道へと私たちを導きます 。そこには、聖書もイスラエルの約束も知っていながら、悲しみと混乱の中に歩む二人の弟子がいました 。彼らは「テキスト（文字）」を知っていましたが、その「意味」を知らなかったのです 。復活したキリストが彼らと共に歩み、聖書全体を説き明かし、すべての記述が「ご自身」に向かっていることを示されたとき、初めてそのテキストは命を吹き込まれました 。

これこそが、現代的でキリスト中心の聖書解釈（ハメニウティクス）の鍵です。すなわち、キリストこそが、聖書全体を正しく理解するための中心であり鍵なのです 。私たちは、テキストを敬いながらも、それを使って境界線を引き、自分の正しさを守ろうとした「ファリサイ派のパン種」に陥らないよう注意しなければなりません 。イエスは、愛、慈しみ、正義を見失った律法主義的な聖書解釈を拒まれました 。私たちにとっての中心はもはや「律法という規則」ではなく、「成就としてのキリスト」なのです 。私たちは聖書を単なる命令の羅列として読むのではなく、福音とイエスの自己犠牲の愛というレンズを通して、聖書の証しの全体を読み解くのです 。

井戸の傍らでの変容（Transformation）

最後に、サマリアの井戸の傍らへと向かいます。そこでイエスは水を汲みに来た一人の女性に出会います 。彼らの会話はすぐに宗教的権威についての議論になりました。「どの山で礼拝するのが正しいのか？」「どのシステムが正しいのか？」という問いです 。これは現代の私たちが「どの教派が正しいのか？」「誰がより優れた聖句を引用しているか？」と問うのと似ています 。

イエスはこの枠組みを根底から打ち砕かれました。聖なる場所に関する宗教的規則から「神の心」へと焦点を移し、真の礼拝者は「霊と真理」をもって礼拝すると宣言されたのです 。神が求めておられるのは、議論に勝てる人ではなく、生ける言葉によって人生が変えられた礼拝者です 。サマリアの女性を揺り動かしたのは規則集ではなく、彼女の傷に寄り添い、尊厳を回復させてくださったキリストとの出会いでした 。

真の礼拝者として生きる

結局のところ、聖書は何のためにあるのでしょうか。それは、人格の形成、キリストの啓示、そして人生の変容のためです 。真のキリスト教は、聖書を私たちをキリストに似た者へと導き、霊と真理をもって生きる自由を与えてくれる「生ける証し」として読みます 。

今週、このことを具体的に実践してみましょう 。

• 変容のために読む： 聖書を読むとき、単に「どんな規則があるか」を問うのではなく、「ここでキリストはどのように示されているか」 、「この箇所は私にどのような人物になるよう促しているか」を問いましょう 。

• 聖書をハンマーとして使わない： スローガンやイデオロギー的な宗教が溢れる時代にあって、議論に勝つために聖書を使おうとする誘惑に抵抗しましょう 。

• 愛の吟味： あなたの聖書通読が、あなたをより愛深く、誠実で、慈しみ深く、正義を重んじる者へと変えているかを自問してください 。

もし聖書を読むことで、私たちがより厳格に、あるいは独善的になっているとしたら、何かが間違っています 。しかし、聖書が生ける言葉（Living Word）となるとき、私たちの目は開かれ、心は燃やされるのです 。神は今も語っておられます。キリストにあって、御言葉は私たちを新しくする命の源となります 。
